Behind the Curtains of 21st Century Communism

This seven year photographic project documents the countries which remain under Communist Party rule during the 21st century. It explores contemporary North Korea, Cuba, China, Vietnam, Laos, Moldova and the Maoist revolution in Nepal, asking how communism has managed to survive, mutate and rebuild after the dramatic collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The project exists as a traveling exhibition, multiple features in major publications and as a forthcoming monograph book. Photographs from this series have won more than a dozen international awards.

For news about the exhibitions, book and publications, please visit the Behind the Curtains site.

Part 1: China-North Korea | Part 2: South-North Korea

Photography inside North Korea is notoriously restrictive, but another sketch of the country can be made from outside.

With a combination of panoramic-format photographs tracing the border landscape and interviews and portraits of North Korean refugees, this ongoing project attempts to decipher life inside the reclusive nation.

Part 1 of this project, following the Sino-Korean border, was made in partnership with the Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund.

Part 2 of this project, following the North-South Korean border, is in production with the support of Emphas.is.
